In a significant development ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The late summer uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the official pact, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the country's established political leadership. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Political Consultations Taking Place

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several major political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a collective duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
