The National Football League has imposed a substantial $250,000 penalty on Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for an action he claims was an “unintentional” offensive hand signal made toward attendees during a recent game at MetLife Stadium.
Widely circulated footage appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture toward opposing supporters, but Jones insists he was actually signaling approval to Dallas supporters in attendance as his team secured a 37-22 victory.
“It was regrettable. That was kind of an interaction with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “There was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was filled with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”
He further emphasized that the signal was completely accidental, occurring amid the elation following the team’s last score. “I simply put up the incorrect finger,” he remarked. “It was inadvertently performed. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it accidental, you can. But it got corrected pretty quick.”
