Astronaut Shares Emotional Distress After Deluge of Harassment Post-Spaceflight

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her battle with depression after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also featured high-profile passengers.

The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, describing a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the period after the flight.

She described the news reports and online discourse as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

The researcher, who has focused her career on female health science and performed experiments during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – including her lab work and astronaut training to the personal milestone of her background – was overshadowed under the avalanche of sexist vitriol.

She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.

Her own goal of reaching space was paused after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

A Path to Recovery

Now, eight months after reaching space, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the well-wishers whose kindness were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.

She noted that amid the criticism, important benefits had come out of the experience, such as elevated attention for her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

Flight Details

The fully automated spacecraft launched from Texas in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that crossed the edge of outer space.

The team of pioneers also included experts in multiple disciplines.

The company behind the mission is a commercial aerospace company established by a well-known tech mogul.
